Black Girls Run! Austin
I am a 33 year old married mother of two, living and working in the Austin area. I recently became an ambassador for Black Girls Run! and I am making daily strides toward personal and physical maturity.
5 years ago I had a 16 month old son and an infant daughter and my husband and I decided to take a trip to Playa del Carmen, Mexico. The entire trip I was unhappy—I didn’t like the hike through the ruins, I didn’t want to hang out on the beach, and no matter what I wore, I was uncomfortable. Although surrounded with beauty, I was miserable. When I returned home, I wanted to get life insurance and at the physical I found out that I weighed 312 lbs.
At 28 I had bad knees, was short of breath, and most of all, I was unhappy. Today, I am not where I want to be, but I can run, I can climb, I don’t hate exercise and I have a much better outlook on life. I can keep up with the kids and finally—I can enjoy a vacation!
I joined Black Girls Run! because I loved the spirit of camaraderie and motivation. The group not only keeps me accountable, it lets me give to other women what I love so much—encouragement. So as they say, success not a sprint, but a marathon. I just make sure to keep running!
