Director of City of Austin Health & Human Services Dept.
Shannon Jones, III was appointed Director of Austin Public Health on April 6, 2015.
He had served as Deputy Director since August 1, 2011, where he oversaw the operations of the Divisions of Human Services, Medical Director, Administration Services, and Public Health and Community Services. He served as Acting Director from February 1 to August 1, 2011. He has been with the department since 1999.
In January of 2011, Mr. Jones was appointed by the Federal Secretary of Health and Human Service, Kathleen Sebelius, to serve a four-year term as Chair of the National Advisory Council for the Elimination of Tuberculosis (ACET) with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Mr. Jones has served as a member of ACET for the past four years. He has served as a Member of the (CDC) National Study of Determinants of Early Diagnosis, Prevention and Treatment of TB in the African American Community. Since 2010, Shannon Jones has served as the executive liaison for the Austin Area Comprehensive HIV Planning Council. Since 2006, he has been the radio talk show host of the “Health Talk with Shannon Jones” on KAZI.
Mr. Jones holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Georgia, a Master of Public Administration from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Pa. and has completed course work towards the Ph.D. in Management and Policy from the University of Texas, School of Public Health in Houston. In addition he was selected as a Woodrow Wilson Administrative Fellow and is an Associate in the American College of Healthcare Executives.
