Akeshia Johnson Smothers is no stranger to the Sexual Health field, having spent over 20 years in this field serving in various roles (in both Louisiana and Texas); as an Outreach Worker, Peer Educator, HIV Counselor and Tester, Disease Intervention Specialist, PHFU Supervisor, PHFU Program Consultant, Trainer, HIV/STI Program Manager and Planning Council Member, has provided her with a wealth of experience as it pertains to HIV/STIs, community engagement, staff and grant management, etc.
Akeshia began her HIV/STI career as a teenager in New Orleans, La when she was personally impacted by the death of a close family member due to complication from AIDS. That moment in time, set forth a path of education and advocacy in the fight against socio-economic difference that direct impact health outcomes.
